NFC Overview

NFC (near field communication) is a short-range wireless technology that enable two devices to exchange securely small amounts of data when they're placed a few centimeters apart. The exchange happens when you simply approach two NFC devices together, close enough to touch.
Typical NFC devices are NFC-enabled mobile phones (like the Nokia C7, the Google Nexus S, and others), intelligent stickers called “NFC tags” which you may find on posters, on point-of-sale displays, or elsewhere.

At Poken, we’ve also created unique NFC devices, which we call pokens, which along with our mobile apps and pokenTAGs, offer a richer, more exciting experience than simple NFC. We’ve gone beyond NFC, to create an ecosystem of devices, apps, and tools that, while completely compatible with the NFC standard, offer a more complete, coherent, colorful and fun experience.

Poken is the only place you can obtain small, USB-format devices that you can use to touch others, or touch pokenTAGs, to collect information. These devices can also securely store personal data such as debit and credit card details, loyalty program data, PIN numbers, among other information.

Using NFC:

• Instead of using an NFC tag to simply launch a website URL on your mobile phone (which you would then have to manually browse, bookmark, and save) Poken provides a much richer experience by having your phone instantly collect and display a complete “ virtual object” including pictures, links to media, your friends’ comments on that object (through social networks), and event coupons or discounts which you can easily redeem by just touching a point-of-sale reader.

• You collect the people, places, and things you come across in a timeline, as well as in a web account, so you can browse them later to act on any follow-up: Emailing or calling someone you met, connecting with them on LinkedIn, reading a document you collected from a smart poster, or subscribing to a contest you entered by touching a promotional tag.

Deploying NFC:

• If you can’t expect everyone around to have an NFC phone with them, and know how to use it, instead of having to place wired NFC readers on every object you may want people equipped with RFID badges to “collect” you can simply place a pokenTAG on each object (no wires, no complexity). Anyone with a poken or with an NFC enabled phone will be able to walk around, and collect rich content by simply touching the tag.

• We have created all the merchant & partner tools that are needed for our partners (event agences, advertising agencies, retailers, and other businesses) to create virtual objects & content that can be assigned to tags, and picked up “with a touch”. All the tools are web-based, easy-to-use, and enable anyone, without any technical knowledge, to use “touch-based marketing” as part of their communication / outreach strategy.

While other companies provide standard NFC applications and tags, Poken is unique in having created an NFC micro-chip that is low-power enough to build an active tag (pokenTAG): a sticker that can be read both by NFC mobile phones (which few people have today) as well as by pokens (which in some environments, such as campuses, events, tradeshows, concerts etc, many people have).

Using Swiss watch-industry microelectronic knowledge, we’ve gone beyond what anyone else has done so far, and created a unique, fully NFC-enabled ecosystem which can easily be deployed anywhere.

Here are some examples of how NFC can be used for. If you are interested in deploying NFC based services in your business, contact us. We’re the experts!:

  • Transfer files between devices with a touch.
  • Payment integration into a mobile device.
  • Electronic money integration with prepaid cards.
  • Electronic ticketing for public transport.
  • Personal electronic ID document.
  • Download of information from kiosks, such as buses time table.
